Termites and Termite Control West Rand

Termites are attracted to homes and all types of buildings as a source of food, particularly targeting cambium found in wood.  Once they have found a food source and have alerted the rest of the termite colony, destruction through the feeding frenzy starts.  Correctly applied pest control measures, eliminates the termites.

Our Treatment Process

Treatment of a termite infestation requires professional help from our trained teams. A thorough inspection of the structure or property is conducted, and problem areas are identified where treatment is necessary. Holes are drilled approximately 1 meter apart around the perimeter of the structure into the foundations where the soil is compacted.  After the application of the termiticide, the holes are neatly closed with cement plugs.

Regardless of the construction type of homes, they can become a source of food for termites.  Wherever wood is used in the building, there is a risk that subterranean termites may alert their colony and target the wood causing widespread damage very quickly.

Termite Facts

Termite Types in Gauteng:

Subterranean termites, so called because they are mostly found below the surface, unlike wood termites. These colonies can grow to over 2 million termites which consume cellulose-based plant materials found in wood used in construction and are a source of food for the subterranean termites.  Once subterranean termites have discovered the wood, they alert the rest of their colony and the feeding frenzy begins as they use the wood as their food source, causing extensive damage.

Because they consume wood from the inside, they are difficult to detect and are often only found once the wood is already destroyed. They eat the inside of skirtings, furniture, Zozo huts and wooden floors, gaining access by building distinctive “Mud Tubes” through cracks in concrete to access the wood, thereby protecting themselves from open air and remaining hidden from view.

Harvester termites mostly attack your lawn and garden, making nests inside the soil and small holes which emerge from the soil. The harvesters are active around midday, chopping pieces of grass to take to their nests.  Although harvesters can also be found in foundations, they are less common than subterranean termites.

Dry wood termites thrive inside dried out wood timbers and burrows and do not require contact with soil.

Damp wood termites eat across the grain of wood and consume moist, decaying wood. They also do not usually make contact with soil, nor do they make tunnels like subterranean termites do.

Termites and ants are not the same insects.  Herewith are some differentiating factors:

Eyes Compound eyes No eyes (sightless)
Body 3 Segments: elbowed 2 Segments: simple string of bead like segments
Life cycle Complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, adult Incomplete metamorphosis: egg, nymph, adult (no pupal stage)
Diet Scavengers of different foods. Do not eat wood. Eat plant tissue, feed on wood, grasses, cause extensive damage to buildings and trees through feeding and nesting habits
